About the Region

One fifth of Sweden's population, 2.3 million inhabitants, lives in the southern part of the country. This region is strongly characterized by its strategic location in the center of the Baltic Sea area and Poland with access to approx. 100 million consumers.

Thanks to its excellent geographic location, two thirds of Sweden's foreign trade derives from the south of Sweden. With four of Sweden's ten largest shipping ports as well easy access to international airports the infrastructure is compelling to the industry.

Why Blekinge County?

Not only tourists, but also entrepreneurs and students have discovered Blekinge as a place to live and work. Why Kalmar County?

Great Variety
Kalmar is closely connected to Öland, “the Island of Sun and Winds”, via one of Europe’s longest bridges. South Öland is classed as world heritage by UNESCO for its unique landscape with “Alvaret”. Here you’ll find ancient castles, and stunning beaches. South Sweden has a diverse flora and fauna, with a great variety of bird species. This represented at “Ottenby Bird Observatory”, where migrating birds are observed.


Industry
Kalmar County Traditionally, the trade and industry of Kalmar County is distinguished by manufacturing and food stuff industries. Branches which include such companies as Norden Packaging, KLS, ITT FLygt, Guldfågeln Chicken Processing Industry, and Ericsson. Also the well known Ikea opened a brand new shopping center in Kalmar this year. Lately, a number of companies in the IT and Telecom sectors have been established in Kalmar and the areas around, for example Felxtronics Design (belongs to Flextronics, one of the biggest companies in the world with more then 50000 employees in China), Telenor and Meridium. Many companies are specialized in Energy and Environment. Kalmar Science Park will further develop and strengthen these companies

An expanding region
In just over a decade, the Baltic Sea region has emerged as on of the most dynamic and fastest growing regions in Europe. The mature economies of Scandinavia and northern Germany have successfully linked up with the young market economies of the Baltic states and Poland. On the eastern shore, St. Petersburg and western Russia provides a market that will attain considerable importance in the near future. Videum Science Park
In the “Videum Science Park”, there are some 90 companies, organizations and institutions. Videum functions on the basis that "Ideas are born when people meet" and creates different types of meeting places where businessmen and women can meet and take advantage of each other’s skills and competences. Videum is located in the Campus area, neighboring Växjö University. There are more examples of creative environments. In the modern business community I11, the former barracks from the 11th Infantry Regiment have been completely renovated and specially adapted and today contain some 70 companies with approximately 1,000 employees.
