In recent years there has been an increasingly pronounced trend towards internationalization of universities and colleges in Southern Sweden, especially in the direction of Denmark after the opening of the Öresund Bridge. This manifests itself most clearly at Öresund University, in which twelve universities and colleges in the Öresund region work closely and have a combined 130,000 students and 10,000 researchers.
The region is number four in Europe for scientific production. It is the leader in marine and water biology and orthopaedics, and second largest in civil engineering, environmental sciences, ergonomics, nuclear physics and public health.
